Agave filifera, commonly known as Thread Agave, is a compact succulent admired for its dark green to bronzy-green sword-like leaves adorned with distinctive white filaments and sharp terminal spines. This symmetrical rosette typically grows up to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for containers or small garden spaces. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers well-draining soil and requires minimal watering, showcasing excellent drought tolerance once established. Unlike many agaves, Agave filifera doesn’t have a fixed blooming season; it can flower from late spring to late fall, producing a tall, dark purple stalk up to 8 feet high adorned with purple blossoms that open sequentially from bottom to top over about a month. This slow-growing plant is hardy in USDA Zones 7 through 10, tolerating temperatures as low as 0°F.
