The Red Ferocactus chrysacanthus, or Ferocactus chrysacanthus var. rubrispinus, is a rare and highly sought-after cactus, prized by collectors for its tightly formed scarlet spines and deeply ribbed body. Unlike more common barrel cacti, this unique species is hard to find in cultivation due to its slow growth rate and limited availability from specialty growers, making it a standout addition to any collection. It typically grows up to 12 inches tall and 8 inches wide, forming a solitary globe-shaped stem that matures beautifully over time. This desert native thrives in full sun with very low water needs, making it ideal for container gardening in bright, dry environments. In summer, it blooms with vivid red flowers that attracts pollinators. Its rarity, combined with its brilliant coloration and classic barrel shape, makes it a true collector’s gem. Best grown in well-draining soil, it is hardy in USDA Zones 9–11.
