Stenocereus griseus, commonly known as the Mexican Organ Pipe Cactus or Pitayo de Mayo, is a majestic columnar cactus featuring upright, bluish-green stems adorned with 6 to 10 ribs and clusters of short spines. In its native habitat, it can reach impressive heights of 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 meters), though it remains more modest in cultivation, typically growing up to 6 feet tall. This fast-growing species thrives in full sun, requiring at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its robust form and encourage blooming. Adapted to arid conditions, it prefers well-draining, porous soil and should be watered sparingly—allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings—to prevent root rot. Hardy in USDA Zones 9b to 11, it tolerates temperatures down to 25°F (–3.9°C) when kept dry. In late summer to early fall, it produces nocturnal white flowers that open at night and close by midday, followed by edible red fruits enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike. Its striking appearance and low-maintenance nature make it a standout addition to xeriscapes, desert gardens, or as a statement container plant.
