Brachychiton rupestris, commonly known as the Queensland Bottle Tree, is a distinctive Australian native renowned for its unique, swollen trunk and drought-tolerant nature. This species features a thick, bottle-shaped trunk with dark gray bark and glossy green leaves that are alternately arranged along the stems. It produces cream-colored flowers with red markings from September to November. In its native habitat, the Queensland Bottle Tree can reach heights of up to 100 feet (30 meters), with a trunk diameter of up to 11.5 feet (3.5 meters) at breast height. However, in cultivation, especially in temperate climates, it typically grows to about 15 feet (4.5 meters) in 15 years. This tree thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils with moderate to low irrigation, exhibiting drought tolerance once established. It is suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 12, withstanding short-duration temperatures down to 18-20°F (-8 to -6°C).
