The Puya alpestris is a striking terrestrial bromeliad with spiky, silver-green leaves that form a dramatic rosette, giving it a bold architectural presence in any garden or container. This plant can grow up to 3 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, with a flower spike that can reach up to 6 feet in height, producing an impressive display. It thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, preferring low water once established but benefiting from occasional irrigation during prolonged dry spells. Blooming typically in late spring to summer, it showcases bright turquoise-blue flowers with orange tips that attract hummingbirds and pollinators. The Puya alpestris is heat- and drought-tolerant, making it ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or as a striking container specimen. Its unique combination of spiky foliage and colorful blooms makes it a conversation-worthy and rare addition to any plant collection. USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11.
