The Portulacaria afra 'Variegata', also known as the Variegated Elephant Bush, is a beautiful succulent with small, round green leaves edged in creamy white and pink tones, carried on reddish-brown stems that give it a striking contrast. This versatile plant can be grown as a compact houseplant or trained into a bonsai, and in the landscape it may reach up to 8–12 feet tall and wide in ideal conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil with low water requirements, making it an excellent choice for drought-tolerant gardens or indoor collections. While it is primarily grown for its stunning foliage, it may occasionally bloom in summer with tiny, star-shaped pink flowers, especially in warm climates. Known for its easy care and resilience, it can be pruned to shape and even used as a living hedge in frost-free regions. The Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' is not only ornamental but also eco-friendly, as it helps absorb carbon from the atmosphere. USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11.
