Ipomoea platensis is a rare and eye-catching caudiciform plant known for its rotund and woody base (caudex) and slender vining stems that sprout delicate, heart-shaped leaves. Over time, the caudex can reach up to 12 inches in diameter, while the vines can trail or climb several feet if supported. This unique plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers warm, dry conditions with infrequent watering, especially during its dormant winter phase. In late spring through summer, it produces beautiful purple flowers like others in the morning glory family. Best grown in well-draining soil and a container that highlights its striking base, it's ideal for collectors who enjoy rare and drought-tolerant plants. Keep protected from frost and cold drafts, especially in cooler climates. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10a–11.
