Ferocactus chrysacanthus, commonly called the Golden-Spined Barrel Cactus, is a striking, slow-growing succulent native to Mexico's Cedros Island. This solitary cactus features a globose to cylindrical shape with 13 to 22 ribs adorned by dense, golden-yellow to reddish spines, some of which may be hooked, giving it a distinctive appearance. Mature plants can reach up to 3 feet (90 cm) in height and about 1 foot (30 cm) in diameter. In summer, it produces vibrant yellow to orange flowers near its crown, adding seasonal interest to its bold form. Ideal for full sun exposure, this drought-tolerant cactus thrives in well-draining, sandy soils and requires minimal watering once established. Hardy in USDA zones 9–10, it can tolerate temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C) and prefers to stay dry during winter months. Perfect for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or container displays, the Golden-Spined Barrel Cactus is a resilient and eye-catching addition to any succulent collection..
