The Cleistocactus winteri cristata, also known as the Crested Golden Rat Tail Cactus, is a striking and unusual succulent prized for its twisting, fan-shaped stems covered in soft golden spines. Its unique crested growth pattern makes each plant one-of-a-kind, with sculptural, wave-like forms that look incredible in pots or hanging baskets. This cactus can spread up to 12 inches wide and reach about 6 to 8 inches tall, although growth can vary depending on how it’s shaped over time. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers low water, making it a great low-maintenance option for warm, dry climates or indoor windowsills with bright light. In late spring to early summer, it may produce vibrant orange-pink flowers, though blooms are less common on crested forms. It requires well-draining soil and protection from frost or excess moisture. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11.
