The Crested Eve's Needle Cactus (Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata) is a rare and visually striking succulent, renowned for its undulating, fan-shaped crests adorned with emerald green, awl-like leaves and occasional fierce white spines . This unique growth pattern results from a mutation that causes the plant's cells to multiply rapidly at the growth point, creating sculptural whorls and ridges . While its wild counterpart can reach heights of 10–13 feet, the crested form typically grows to a manageable 1–3 feet tall and wide, making it perfect for containers or small garden spaces . Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers well-draining soil and requires minimal watering—allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot . This drought-tolerant cactus is hardy in USDA Zones 9–11, tolerating temperatures down to 25°F (–3.9°C) when kept dry . Its low-maintenance nature and dramatic appearance make the Crested Eve's Needle an exceptional choice for xeriscaping, desert gardens, or as a striking container plant.
