The Cylindropuntia cholla, commonly known as Cholla Cactus, is a rugged and eye-catching cactus with cylindrical, jointed stems covered in dense clusters of spines that can appear silver or golden in sunlight. This hardy cactus can grow up to 5 to 7 feet tall and forms a striking, shrubby silhouette in desert or xeriscape gardens. It thrives in full sun, requires very low water, and demands well-draining soil to prevent root rot. During the spring and early summer, Cholla produces beautiful pink to magenta flowers, which are followed by yellowish spiny fruits that persist into fall. It's ideal for dry, arid landscapes and adds dramatic texture and contrast to cactus collections or desert-themed gardens. Drought-tolerant and heat-loving, it is best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 8–11.
