Cereus aethiops, commonly known as Soapweed Cactus, is a striking, shrubby cactus native to Argentina and Uruguay. It features upright to sprawling stems with a distinctive blue-green hue and a waxy coating, adorned with prominent black spines. This cactus can grow up to 6.6 feet (2 meters) tall and spread about 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide, making it an impressive addition to any succulent collection. In late spring to early summer, it produces large, fragrant, white to pale pink flowers that bloom at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators. Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, Cereus aethiops is drought-tolerant and prefers minimal watering, especially during its winter dormancy. Hardy in USDA Zones 9 to 11, it can tolerate temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C) for short periods. Its unique appearance and low-maintenance nature make it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and desert-themed gardens.
