Aloe glauca, commonly known as Blue Aloe, is a striking succulent native to South Africa, celebrated for its powdery blue-gray leaves that form dense rosettes. These fleshy leaves, edged with small reddish-brown teeth, may blush pink under full sun or environmental stress, adding seasonal interest. Mature plants typically reach 2 to 3 feet in height and spread 2 to 4 feet wide, making them ideal for containers, rock gardens, or xeriscapes. In late fall through early spring, Aloe glauca produces tall spikes of vibrant orange-red tubular flowers, attracting hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers well-draining, gritty soil and requires minimal watering—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. This drought-tolerant species is hardy in USDA Zones 9b to 11, tolerating temperatures down to 20°F (–6.7°C) when kept dry. Its low-maintenance nature and architectural beauty make Aloe glauca a standout addition to any succulent collection or drought-tolerant landscape.
