Agave shawii is a striking barrel-style succulent featuring rosettes of thick, ovate green leaves edged with hooked red spines and crowned with a stiff terminal point. It typically grows to about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, and over time forms clumping colonies via offsets. Thriving in full sun and gritty, well-drained soil, this drought-tolerant agave produces a dramatic 8–12 foot flowering stalk crowned with yellow-green blooms in late winter to early summer, then the rosette dies back. Hardy in USDA Zones 9b–11b, it’s perfect for xeric gardens and coastal succulent landscapes.
