Sugar Bush (Rhus ovata) is a resilient evergreen shrub native to Southern California, Arizona, and Baja California, celebrated for its leathery, dark green leaves and reddish stems. In early spring, it produces clusters of small, pink to white flowers, followed by sticky red berries that attract birds and other wildlife. Typically growing 8 to 15 feet tall and wide, it can mature into a small tree up to 35 feet tall under optimal conditions. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Sugar Bush prefers well-drained soils and is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for water-wise landscapes. Hardy in USDA Zones 7–11, it serves as an excellent choice for erosion control, privacy screening, or as a specimen plant in native gardens. Its low maintenance and adaptability make it a valuable addition to sustainable and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Please note that the plant may or may not be in bloom when purchased. You will receive a similar or better plant as the one pictured. These are fully rooted plants. Shipping will be via USPS Priority Mail within the United States and its outlying territories ONLY. We do not ship internationally.

All of our plants are shipped bare-root and without their original nursery pot. This is done both to protect the plant and to reduce shipping expenses. We pack our products by hand and take great care to ensure they arrive at their final destination safely. Upon receiving your plants, make sure to remove them from their packaging immediately, repot them using dry soil, and provide ample sunlight. Water as needed, making sure to water again only when the soil is completely dry.
