Red Box Gum (Eucalyptus polyanthemos), also known as Silver Dollar Gum, is a striking evergreen tree native to eastern Australia, celebrated for its ornamental appeal and resilience. It features a domed canopy with glaucous blue-green, aromatic foliage—juvenile leaves are nearly circular, maturing into lance-shaped forms—complemented by peeling bark that reveals smooth, cream-colored underlayers. In early spring, it produces clusters of small white flowers, adding seasonal interest. This fast-growing tree can reach heights of 35 to 75 feet with a spread of 15 to 45 feet under optimal conditions, though it often remains smaller in urban settings . Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, Red Box Gum is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for low-water landscapes . Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11, it's suitable for use as a specimen tree, windbreak, or even as a source of cut foliage for floral arrangements. Its minimal litter and adaptability make it a valuable addition to both residential and commercial landscapes.
