Lion's Tail (Leonotis leonurus) is a striking, fast-growing evergreen shrub native to South Africa, celebrated for its whorls of vibrant orange, tubular flowers that bloom from late spring through fall. Its aromatic, lance-shaped dark green leaves and upright, square stems add architectural interest to any garden. Reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet and spreading 3 to 5 feet wide, Lion's Tail serves as an excellent backdrop or focal point in borders and pollinator gardens. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for xeriscaping and low-water landscapes. Hardy in USDA zones 8–11, it can withstand temperatures down to 20°F, though it may die back in colder climates and regrow from the base in spring. This resilient shrub attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in your garden. For optimal shape and blooming, prune annually after flowering.
