Elegia tectorum, commonly known as Cape Thatching Reed, is an elegant, evergreen perennial native to South Africa's Cape region. This architectural plant features upright, reed-like green stems adorned with decorative brown bands, creating a striking, grass-like texture ideal for modern landscapes or water-wise gardens. Mature plants typically reach 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, forming dense, fountain-like clumps that add movement and structure to garden designs. Thriving in full sun, Elegia tectorum prefers moist but well-drained sandy or loamy soils and is drought-tolerant once established. It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11 and can be grown in containers or directly in the ground. Low-maintenance and deer-resistant, this unique plant brings both form and function to coastal, Mediterranean, or contemporary garden settings.
