Coffeeberry (Frangula californica) is a versatile evergreen shrub native to California, renowned for its glossy dark green leaves and reddish stems that provide year-round visual appeal. In spring, it produces small, greenish-yellow flowers that attract pollinators, followed by berries that transition from green to red to black, serving as a food source for birds and wildlife. Typically reaching 6 to 8 feet in height and width, Coffeeberry can be pruned to maintain a smaller size or shaped into a hedge or screen. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it adapts well to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. Hardy in USDA Zones 7 through 10, this low-maintenance shrub is ideal for erosion control, fire-resistant landscaping, and supporting native biodiversity. Its resilience and adaptability make it a valuable addition to both residential and commercial gardens.
