Weingartia trollii, also known as Rebutia trollii, is a captivating cactus species native to Bolivia, admired for its distinctive appearance and vibrant blooms. This solitary, globose to short cylindrical cactus features 16 to 18 tuberculate ribs, often spiraling, adorned with 2 to 8 central spines up to 2 cm long and 16 to 24 yellowish radial spines with brown tips, each about 1 cm in length. Mature plants can reach up to 8 inches (20 cm) in height and 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter. In early summer, it produces striking orange to orange-scarlet flowers approximately 2.5 cm in diameter, which uniquely emerge near the apex of the plant and remain open for five to six days. This cactus thrives in full sun and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. It is drought-tolerant and benefits from regular watering during the summer months, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Weingartia trollii is suitable for USDA hardiness zone 10 and can tolerate temperatures down to 24.8°F (-4°C), though it should be protected from prolonged frost. This low-maintenance cactus is ideal for both novice and experienced collectors seeking a unique addition to their plant collection.
