The Oreocereus trollii, often called the Old Man of the Andes, is a cactus known for its tall, columnar shape covered in soft white hairs and adorned with scarlet red thorns. This slow-growing cactus can reach up to 12 inches tall and 4 inches wide, making it a standout in any collection or arid landscape. It thrives in full sun, requires very little water, and should be planted in well-draining soil to avoid rot. Its woolly covering allows it to handle bright light and cooler temperatures better than many other cacti. In late spring to early summer, mature plants may produce deep red to magenta flowers near the top, though blooming is rare in indoor settings. Ideal for collectors, xeriscaping, or sunny windowsills. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 7–10.
