Notocactus ritterianus, also known as Parodia mammulosa, is a captivating cactus species native to Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul region. This species features a globular to short cylindrical shape with pronounced ribs adorned by clusters of yellowish spines, creating a striking visual appeal. Typically, it reaches up to 4 inches (10 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter, making it well-suited for indoor cultivation. In the summer months, it produces vibrant yellow flowers that add a splash of color to any collection. Notocactus ritterianus thrives in bright, direct sunlight and requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix or a blend of sand, perlite, and peat moss, to prevent root rot. It is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. This species prefers moderate temperatures and can tolerate low humidity, making it suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11.
