The Opuntia miquelii is a bold and fast-growing prickly pear cactus known for its large, flat, paddle-shaped segments covered in clusters of golden spines and tiny glochids that give it a textured, rugged appearance. This shrubby cactus can grow up to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide, making it a striking feature in xeriscapes, desert gardens, or large containers. It thrives in full sun, requires very little water, and prefers well-draining, sandy or rocky soil for optimal growth. In late spring to early summer, it produces vibrant yellow flowers that can sometimes have a reddish tint at the base, followed by ornamental, spiny fruit. Extremely drought-tolerant and heat-loving, it’s an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Be cautious when handling due to its sharp spines and glochids. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 8–11.
