Hamatocactus davisii, also known as Ferocactus hamatacanthus var. davisii, is a distinctive cactus species native to northeastern Mexico. This solitary cactus features a globular to short cylindrical, green stem adorned with prominent ribs and long, robust, hooked spines that range from reddish to yellowish hues. Typically, it reaches a height and width of 4 to 8 inches. During the blooming season, it produces pale metallic yellow flowers. Hamatocactus davisii thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires a gritty, well-draining soil mix. While it is drought-tolerant, it benefits from moderate watering during the summer months, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This species is suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 8 to 9 and 11 to 24, tolerating temperatures down to 20°F.
