Gymnocalycium armatum, also known as Gymnocalycium spegazzinii var. armatum, is a captivating, small globular cactus species native to Argentina. It features a perfectly spherical, grayish-green body with well-marked ribs adorned by large, round, whitish downy areoles. The plant is equipped with long, robust, and slightly hooked yellow-reddish spines that completely envelop its body, giving it a distinctive appearance. Typically, it grows up to 2.4 inches (6 cm) in height and 3.1 inches (8 cm) in diameter. This cactus thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. It is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Gymnocalycium armatum prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from frost, making it suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11.
