Festuca ovina, commonly known as Sheep Fescue, is a compact, cool-season bunchgrass with fine, stiff, blue-green to gray-green foliage forming dense, tufted mounds. It typically grows up to 12 inches tall and wide, making it ideal for low-maintenance groundcover or erosion control. Thriving in full sun to light shade, Sheep Fescue prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. In late spring to early summer, it produces narrow, spike-like flowering panicles that rise above the foliage, adding subtle texture to the landscape. This perennial grass is slow-growing, requires minimal mowing, and is resistant to common turf diseases. Hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8.
